Healing Holiday

As I sit here writing this, the endless pit-pattering sound of rain falling outside, the sudden temperature drop a couple of days ago that took us immediately into Autumn proper, it’s funny to think that just a few days ago I was nicely roasting (and resting) in the gorgeous AndalucĂan sunshine.

Completely exhausted physically, mentally and spiritually having not taken a holiday for far too long, dear friends Camden and Sara invited me to stay with them at exactly the right time to save me from burn-out. Timing was everything. They didn’t know it of course, nor had I realised quite how tired I was, but I am gratefully reminded again of the amazing power of human connection and that I am loved and looked after by the wonderful Universe, which always interjects at the opportune moment.

On arrival at Casa Rosa, the utterly fabulous home that Camden and Sara have designed and built in a tiny lane close to the small whitewashed hilltop village of Vejer, I immediately realised I was in retreat heaven. I spent the first two days doing little or nothing. I sat in the lovely garden enjoying the sunshine and swam in the pool. I ate delicious vegetables and slept like a log. I enjoyed hanging out with Sol and Ava, their lovely children. I relished having proper time to read – currently halfway through Eckhart Tolle’s ‘A New Earth’ – and for much, much meditation.

I love succulent plants, so perfect for the Spanish heat

Their house is a palace – a beautiful and functional design masterpiece to which I could not do justice by even attempting to describe here. I can only say I am extremely inspired by what they have achieved.
Then, about two months ago Sara opened a little shop called Gusto in Vejer village with her mother, Katie Sender. It’s too gorgeous! More about Gusto later though….

About to change the shop window, everyone had been busy preparing for a pop art theme and I had a really good time helping out with the project.

And then to the beaches! The weather was great. The sun shone endlessly and the rain that was forecast stayed away until Sunday when it rained warm showers and I enjoyed looking around Katie’s sea-front garden.

We had a little cloud too. Dramatic cloud shifting quickly across the sky and obscuring the hot, hot sun as it travelled, nature’s power once again amazing to watch.

And days of simple roasting heat too – my favourite!

And now I’m back and feeling fine and ready to face the winter with joy in my heart, thoroughly inspired by my lovely friends and very grateful for their kindness and hospitality. I am uplifted. It’s still raining, it’s cold and the sky is so grey that I have to work by lamplight at midday. But I don’t mind. I’m a lucky woman.
